Ken Miller, whose Saskatchewan Roughriders scored 54 points against the Montreal Alouettes on July 1, has challenged his team to exceed 60 points in today’s game.
The Riders’ head coach has challenged his team to score a point a minute. Whether it’s an attainable goal is up for debate. In 4,495 CFL, WIFU and IRFU games played since 1945, only 28 teams have scored 60 points or more in a single game. The CFL single-season record for points per game is 38.8 set by the Calgary Stampeders in 1994. Miller wasn’t deterred when informed of those statistics.
“We don’t desire to be like what has been,’’ said Miller, whose Riders are to play the B.C. Lions today (8 p.m., TSN, CKRM) at Empire Field. “We want to be the new echelon and that’s what we would like to achieve.’’
The possibility of a point-a-minute pace comes up after the Riders beat the Montreal Alouettes 54-51 in double overtime in a Canada Day shootout at Mosaic Stadium. The Riders fell short of 60 points — even with the extra time — but one wonders what they can do to top those offensive fireworks.
“We feel that when we’re hitting on all cylinders, we should score a point a minute,’’ said Riders veteran running back Wes Cates. “We almost hit our mark and we’re trying to get better. We think we have the capabilities of being the best offence in the CFL and that’s how we are approaching it. We want to make plays early and often and not make mistakes.’’
The Lions will have a say today in limiting the explosions when it comes to the Riders’ offence. Today’s encounter between the 1-0 West Division teams is the first outdoor CFL game played in Vancouver since 1982. Today’s game is being held at Empire Field, which is serving as the Lions’ home for the 2010 season and part of 2011 while BC Place Stadium undergoes major renovations.
Miller said his team’s goal isn’t a knock against defences. He feels it’s more of a recognition of the wide-open CFL game.
“With the size of the field and with a sophisticated attack and knowledgeable receivers and a good quarterback, it’s possible to do that,’’ said Miller.
The Riders have those attributes and more. Their receiving corps is among the league’s best. Quarterback Darian Durant is coming off one of his best games as a starter. He threw for 478 yards, completed five touchdown passes and rushed for another as the Riders rallied from a 24-10 first-half deficit to pull out the win.
“We showed we can do it in the second half,’’ said Durant, who didn’t throw an interception in the win over the Alouettes. “To tie the game, we scored 30 points. It can happen and Coach Miller preaches that. It’s definitely our goal. Sixty points is a lot but if you don’t aim high, you will never reach the top.’’
Miller has also challenged Doug Berry, the Riders’ offensive co-ordinator and assistant head coach, to reach that number. Berry chuckled when reminded of Miller’s scoring goals.
“It’s not an offensive thing as much as it is a team thing,’’ said Berry. “The defence can contribute with interceptions and field position. The special teams can contribute. He feels if the whole team is working together and having a good day, it’s very capable for the team to do. The point is it’s achievable so why set our goals short?’’
The Alouettes set the league record for points scored in a game with 82 after beating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 82-14 on Oct. 20, 1954. Twenty-four home teams have scored more than 60 points in a game and just four road teams have exceeded that mark. The Riders’ record for points in a game is 58. That was established in 1989 when the Riders beat the Ottawa Rough Riders 58-22 on Aug. 7.
While turning 60 is the team’s goal, the ultimate accomplishment remains recording the win.
